Considering that this was the pilot, it's really not that bad. Some main characters were introduced (I already have a favourite and an unfavourite) and reasonably strong foundations were laid for the rest of the show. This episode tells a story of how Will Schuester, a visionary Spanish teacher, begins to try to revive the school's Glee club after its head had just been fired for "harassing" a student (I'm looking at you, Rachel). Another important theme in this episode (and I'm sure that it'll be discussed time and time again later on) is 'having the chance to shine', which brings us to our main (student) characters:
- Mercedes Jones, who sang Respect at her audition and appears to be somewhat of a diva. It's a pity we didn't get any background on her.
- Arty Abrams (I think?) didn't get an audition, but already, he's my Emmett (I'm sure you Sparklers know what I'm talking about). He just has that awesome vibe. It's even more awesome that he didn't have to say (or sing) that many lines to emanate it. He's just cool like that.
- Tina C (I hope the C isn't something stereotypical, like Chan or Chow) who sang I Kissed a Girl. No background either.
- Kurt Hummel also didn't get a background, but his audition was insane!
- Rachel Berry was the only one who got TWO SCENES for her audition AND a background. Sure, she can sing, but so can the others! And I'm sure that the others are more interesting (not to mention less deranged) than she is. I think you know who my least favourite character is now.
- Finn (no last name to speak of yet) seems pretty cool (Arty's still ahead, though). He brings a degree of realism to the status of football players, but the only thing remotely crazy about him is his girlfriend. Needs development, but that should come in future episodes.
I'd like to finish off with a nitpick: Emma, the guidance counselor, is shown to draw a love heart around a yearbook photo of Will. Hang on! Isn't that yearbook property of the school? Emma's a vandal! *chants* Emma's a vandal! Emma's a vandal!
That's all for now. 'Til next week.
